Introduction
With over 25,000 new cars sold annually in Nigeria and the growing urban populations of Lagos and Abuja, understanding the environmental impact of transportation is crucial for shaping a greener future. This survey, conducted by The AR Initiative in 2022, provides a comprehensive look at the carbon footprint of road transport in these two major cities and offers actionable insights for advancing eco-friendly practices.
Project Overview
As a Sustainability Research Analyst at The AR Initiative, I co-led a pioneering survey aimed at evaluating the environmental impact of road transport in Abuja and Lagos. This project focused on collecting and analyzing data to shed light on the current state of transportation emissions and to foster the adoption of sustainable practices.
Key Activities
- Survey Design and Execution: I developed and implemented a comprehensive survey across Abuja and Lagos. This survey engaged a diverse range of stakeholders, including bus drivers, petrol station operators, and vehicle owners, to gather insights on costs, emissions, and transportation preferences.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging with various stakeholders was pivotal. I conducted interviews and focus groups to understand the real-world implications of transportation emissions and gather detailed feedback on the challenges and opportunities within the sector.
- Data Analysis and Findings: I analyzed the data collected, focusing on vehicle age, emissions intensity, and environmental concerns. This analysis highlighted critical issues such as the outdated vehicle fleet and the need for immediate action to mitigate emissions.
- Collaboration with Local Automakers: I worked closely with local automakers to review emission standards and explore sustainable technologies. This collaboration was essential for identifying potential improvements in manufacturing practices and promoting cleaner technologies.
- Environmental Awareness Campaign: By revealing the transportation sector’s pollution footprint, I aimed to increase environmental awareness and highlight the sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. This effort was crucial for driving public and policymaker attention towards sustainability.
- Policy Recommendations and Strategic Insights: The survey provided actionable insights for policymakers, facilitating discussions on sustainable urban mobility. I synthesized quantitative data with qualitative narratives to offer a nuanced view of the sector’s sustainability landscape.
- Tailored Strategies for Abuja: I developed specific strategies to steer Abuja towards more eco-friendly transportation solutions. These strategies were designed to address the city’s unique challenges and opportunities in transitioning to greener practices.
